Ms. Cunningham's recipes read like carefully written instructions from a generous friend and cook, and her writing style is reassuring and comforting. Consider her note on toast -
I think toast is best when it is evenly golden. If you ever take the time to toast bread under the broiler, you will agree that it's lots better than toast made in an electric toaster. Keep your butter spreadable so you can butter your toast right to the edges and have butter in every bite." (pg. 31)
Oh, the benevolence of one who genuinely cares how you butter your bread!
